In October 2017, as part of the technical institutional capacity support of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) Abuja, a 3-day Media/Communication training was held for all LHI Staffs for the first day while the last 2 days were zeroed in on the staffs involved our communication/media related activities.

The training objective was to support LHI in developing a strong, viable and sustainable Communication framework in ensuring that LHI is able to communicate more effectively and efficiently.

A team of 3 came in from NDI, led by Laura Ingalis, an experience Communication Experts with Annabel Ugwoke and Ene Ede from Search for Common Grounds. Sessions were held on Public Speaking, Social Media, Photography, Website development, Newsletters, traditional communications funnel, Style Guide and Building Relationships


Before now, we are timid and backbenchers but through the various innovative and focused capacity building, women especially Kilgori women are saying, ’no more to just warming the bench. The Kilgori Women Group with technical support from LHI organized an awareness outreach on the 21st Nov 2017 at Kilgori community, Yabo LGA, Sokoto State.

The outreach was aimed at educating, enlightening and engaging the larger communities especially women on their rights and responsibilities as a citizen, voters’ registration, highlighting the challenges women faces with possible solutions and the benefits of their active participation in every aspect of life especially in the areas of health, water, sanitation and education.

The outreach had in attendance Honorable Councilor of the community who commended the women’s effort towards the development of their community also commended Life Helpers Initiative and National Democratic Institute for their great effort in transforming the women in the community. The Honorable Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education graced the occasion in Kilgori on the women’s invitation spoke on the importance of voter’s card and encouraged the women on education.


With the support of the USAID through National Democratic Institute (NDI) Abuja, in partnership with Life Helpers Initiative (LHI), the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) organized a day meeting along with other critical stakeholders to develop the Terms of Reference for the position of a Women Desk Officer in the Local Government level on the 7th December 2017 at the Women Development Center Sokoto


The Women Desk Office is one of the key project desired outcome as we implement the Increasing Women Participation in local governance through Advocacy under the Electoral Empowerment Civil Society Project; the position is designed to support the aggregation of the needs of women, children anf people with special needs at the local in line with the Draft Sokoto State Gender Policy which is currently waiting for approval.


Key stakeholders at the meeting included Hajia Kulu A. Sifawa (Hon Comm. MoWAC), Hajia Aisha Dantsoho (Perm Sec. MoWAC), Mallam Aliyu Abubakar Tureta(Hon. Chairman Rabah LG), Mal. Salisu L. (Hon. Chairman Tureta LG), Dr Kulu Haruna, former Commissioner of Education, Prof Aisha Madawaki Isah MFR, former Commissioner, MoWAC. There were others in attendance such as distinguished honourable members of the House of Assembly, NDI Country Director, Mr Aubrey and Annabel Ugwoke Program Officer NDI, LHI team.
