Mentoring Frontline Health Workers Under the Integrated Health Program

LHI Communications 15 June 2024 1 min read

Under the Integrated Health Program (IHP), LHI's trainers used the low-dose, high-frequency approach: short training followed by onsite mentoring in the health facilities where providers work every day.

Scenes from the mentoring visits include:

  • Participants reviewing the IMCI chart at Chidera Clinic Maternity, Amechi Okposi.
  • A mentee weighing a nine-month-old baby at Okaria MDGs PHC and counselling the mother on why her baby was classified as underweight.
  • Trainees checking vaccine expiry dates and vaccine vial monitors and documenting vaccines at PHC Onicha.
  • Trainees performing malaria rapid diagnostic tests while completing the sick child recording form.
  • Counselling an HIV-positive mother with pictures showing how ARVs prevent mother-to-child transmission.
  • Role play on exclusive breastfeeding and counselling on complementary feeding at UG Clinic Maternity.
  • Community-based health volunteers on house-to-house visits, and women tasting food at a nutrition demonstration.
  • Pre- and post-tests on nutrition at Chidera Clinic, Onicha and Ndiunuhu health centres, and an MNP orientation for trainers in Ohaozara LGA.

Across the programme, more than 3,200 health providers were trained across 712 PHCs and communities in Bauchi, Ebonyi, Kebbi and Sokoto States.
